Worldwide Emergency Services Number on the Horizon

The World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT-12) introduced a new resolution which would allow citizens and visitors abroad to access local emergency services through a well-known, universal number.

The resolution, tabled at this year's conference in Dubai, instructs the Telecommunications Standardardization Bureau to take the necessary action to allow ITU=T Study Group 2 to explore the option of introducing such a harmonized emergency number.

The resolution is highly significant because it si not currently possible to globalize national numbers for access to emergency services abroad.  Therefore, further research is necessary.  The 193 member states each manage their own numbers in different ways, and the numbers have been allocated diversely in various countries.  The outcome of the new WCIT-12 resolution specifies two emergency numbers which could possibly provide the solution needed to harmonize emergency numbers.
