NTIA Requests Comment for FirstNet Architectural Concepts

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) released a Notice of Inquiry (NOI) this week on behalf of the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) seeking comment on the conceptual network architecture presented at the Board's first meeting, as well as other network design and business model options.

Some major aspects of the desired network include comprehensive nationwide coverage (including all Federal, State, Tribal, and Local government organizations in all 50 states and 6 territories), reliability, redundancy (with access to 3-6 wireless networks), interoperability, cost-effectiveness, and quick availability (with implementation beginning in 2013 or 2014 timeframe).

This NOI is another significant step for the FirstNet Board, which has been tasked with making all major decisions on the above considerations as well as partnerships, utilization of current infrastructure, and how to define ongoing evolution of the network to continuously meet the needs of first responders.
